history
Today's city developed from an old Slavic settlement into which German settlers moved (probably not until the 13th century) . The settlement used the Augsburg ( Magdeburg? ) Law. The settlement was mentioned in detail for the first time in 1241, and you learn that there was a Cistercian monastery and German settlers here, and that Bardejov was already a highly developed settlement. In 1376 it was made a royal city and in 1405 a royal free city . The city reached its greatest boom in the 15th century; this was followed by an economic decline, but an upswing in the intellectual field. At the beginning of the 16th century, Bardejov became part of the Pentapolitana . As early as the 16th century, Slovaks came to the highest offices in the city, and the city was Slovakized early on.
In his letter of November 22, 1559 from Erlau to Ferdinand , the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Antonius Verantius (Verancsics), Bishop of Erlau, reported that the later despot of Moldavia , Jacobus Heraclides , had come to him and told him reported his previous preparations for gaining power in the Voivodate of Moldova. He also stopped in Bartfeld, where Verantius and Sigismundus Torda (in Eperies ) were recommended to him.
At least 931 Jewish residents who had lived in Bardejov before the war and were mostly deported were murdered in the Holocaust . At least 38 Jews were murdered in the city itself, including 31 remaining Jewish residents.
In 2017, Bardejov was awarded the honorary title of “ Reformation City of Europe ” by the Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe .
