The churches were built between the 16th and 18th centuries and are considered by the World Heritage Committee to be "a good example of a rich local tradition of religious architecture at the interface between Western European and Byzantine culture". Two Roman Catholic churches, three Protestant churches, also known as articulated churches , and three Greek Catholic churches were awarded.
