Vlkolínec is a village of 35 inhabitants and belongs to the town of Ružomberok , Slovakia , which is four kilometers away. Because of its extraordinary, untouched settlement with 40 original, inhabited wooden houses, it was included in the list of world cultural and natural heritage of mankind in 1993.
history
The place, whose name is derived from vlk ("wolf"), was mentioned for the first time in 1376 and is located at about 700-800 meters above sea level in the Great Fatra in northern Slovakia below the Sidorovo mountain ( 1099 m nm ).
In 1630 the construction of wolf pits was decreed. The construction of the bell house began in 1770. In 1775 the wooden Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built. The retaliatory measures of the German Wehrmacht in 1944 resulted in a partial destruction of the buildings erected. In 1977 the place was placed under monument protection. There has been a local partnership with Holašovice in the Czech Republic since 2007 .
The unadulterated place is one of the few in Europe where bears, wolves and other animals still live freely. The village is unique in Central Europe, the houses are made of wood and painted with patterns and pictures. No roads were built, the houses were without electricity or water pipes. Many of the residents are over 80 years old.
