Žehra (German Schigra , Hungarian Zsigra - until 1902 Zsegra ) is a village in the Spiš region in Slovakia .
location
It is located in eastern Slovakia about 17 kilometers from Levoča and 5 kilometers from the Spiš Castle , which is on the territory of the municipality. In addition to the main town Žehra , the north-west part of the village Hodkovce (incorporated in 1877; German Hotzendorf ) belongs to the place .
History and sights
The place was first mentioned in 1245 as Sygura . The Romanesque Church of the Holy Spirit from 1275 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1993) because of its Gothic frescoes (created between the 13th and 15th centuries ).
After a fire in the 15th century, it was given a Gothic vault supported by a central column like a palm tree.
The oldest wall paintings are the so-called consecration crosses (consecration crosses) from 1275. In the tympanum of the south portal there is a representation of Golgotha , also from the 13th century. A representation of the Trinity as a three head comes from the 14th century . The pictures were probably whitewashed as a result of a plague epidemic in 1644/45 and exposed again in the 20th century.
In the village of Hodkovce, surrounded by a large French park, there is a baroque chateau of the Counts Csáky from 1703.
