Smižany (German Schmögen , Hungarian Szepessümeg - until 1882 Smizsán ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia , near the town of Spišská Nová Ves .
It is the largest municipality without urban status in Slovakia and is located on the Hornád River on the northern slopes of the Slovak Paradise .
history
The place was first mentioned as Micha in 1246 , then as Sumugh in a 1254 list by King Bela . The place with a mining past (in the 19th century there were up to 3 blast furnaces) belonged to the union of the 24 Spiš cities , later to the union of the 11 Spiš cities .
In 1910 the place had 1360 mainly Slovak residents and belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia .
Today around 10 percent of the population are Roma .
