Vítkovce (German Witkensdorf or older Witkowetz , Hungarian Vitfalva - to 1888 Vitkóc ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 592 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and is part of the Spišská Nová Ves District , part of the kraj Košický , as well as the traditional landscape Zips .
geography
The community is located in the southern part of the Hornádska kotlina basin on the left bank of the Hornád , not far from its confluence with the Lodina brook on the left bank . Beyond the river rise the wooded ridges and mountains of Hnilecké vrchy , a part of the Slovak Ore Mountains . The center of the village is at an altitude of 406 m nm and is 10 kilometers from Spišské Vlachy and 14 kilometers from Spišská Nová Ves .
Neighboring municipalities are Spišský Hrušov in the north, Olcnava in the east, Poráč in the south and Chrasť nad Hornádom in the west.
history
Vítkovce arose in the 13th century in a wooded piece of land that a certain Vitk received in an act of donation from Béla IV . In particular, the resulting settlement appears for the first time in 1279 as Vytk . In 1298 it was mentioned in connection with a permit to build a church. Later the village was part of the estate of the Spiš Chapter. In 1828 there were 19 houses and 140 inhabitants, whose main source of income was agriculture.
Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Vítkovce had 580 inhabitants, including 579 Slovaks . There is no information on ethnicity for one resident.
547 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church and 31 residents to the Brethren Church. In the case of two residents, the denomination was not determined.
Buildings and monuments
- Roman Catholic Church of Philip and James in the early Gothic style from the 13th century. The altar is designed in Baroque style, inside you can find fragments of Gothic wall painting from the 14th century

In Vítkovce there is a stop on the Košice – Žilina railway line .
