Slovinky is a municipality in the east of Slovakia , with a population of 1,862 (December 31, 2019) and is part of the Spišská Nová Ves District , a district of Košický kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in a long valley of the Slovinský creek (right tributary of the Hornád ) at the confluence with the Poráčsky creek in the extreme north of the Volovské vrchy mountains , more precisely the lower part of the Hnilecké vrchy. Slovinky is traditionally part of the Lower Spiš region ( Dolný Spiš in Slovak ). The town center, at an altitude of 441  m nm , is five kilometers south of Krompachy and 30 kilometers east of Spišská Nová Ves .

history

The present municipality was created in 1944 through the merger of the places Nižné Slovinky (German Unterhöfen , Hungarian Alsószalánk ) and Vyšné Slovinky (German Oberhöfen , Hungarian Felsőszalánk ).

The place arose in the early Middle Ages on what was then the nearby town of Göllnitz as a mining site. The exact year of foundation is unknown, but is said to have taken place before the German colonization in the east . In a document of the Hungarian King Ludwig I from 1368, a villa Abakuk is mentioned. In 1460 two villages are recorded as Zluwinkautraque ; Documents from 1550 and 1555 confirm the existence of Nižné Slovinky and Vyšné Slovinky. The area initially belonged to the estate of Reichenau , then until the abolition of serfdom in 1848 to the families Zápolya, Thurzo and Csáky.

The original population were probably the ancestors of the Slovaks . In the 16th century there was a large influx of Russians (Ruthenians) who changed the character of both places. In addition to mining, most of the residents were active in charcoal burning and forestry .

For many years copper and silver were mined near the site. The St. Nikolaus steelworks was added in the 18th century. At the end of the 19th century, copper and silver mining came to a standstill; thereafter the mining was limited to the mining of iron ore, which was processed in Krompachy. In 1994 the last mine was finally closed.
