Kalava (German Karlsdorf , Hungarian Szepeskárolyfalva - until 1907 Kalyava ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 398 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and is part of the Spišská Nová Ves District , part of the kraj Košický , as well as the traditional landscape Zips .

geography

The community is located on the southern slope of the Branisko Mountains . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 560  m nm and is six and a half kilometers from Krompachy and 27 kilometers from Spišská Nová Ves .

Neighboring municipalities are Vojkovce in the north, Hrišovce in the east, Richnava in the southeast, Krompachy in the south, Kolinovce in the southwest and Spišské Vlachy in the west.

history

Kaľava was first mentioned in writing in 1300 as Kaloua or Kalyawa . Until the middle of the 15th century it was part of the Richnava Castle estate, after the Zsigray family died out , the village again became part of the vast domain of the Spis Castle . Thus, until the abolition of serfdom in 1848, the families Zápolya , Thurzo and Csáky were landlords, leases were shorter exceptions. In 1787 the village had 16 houses and 152 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 28 houses and 201 inhabitants who mainly worked as farmers and commuted to neighboring Krompachy.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Kaľava had 421 inhabitants, 375 of whom were Slovaks , three Roma and one Czech . There is no information on ethnicity for 42 inhabitants.

335 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses and to the Greek Catholic Church. 27 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 55 residents was not determined.
