Hnilčík (German Eisenbach , Hungarian Szepespatak - until 1907 Kishnilec ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 559 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and is part of the Spišská Nová Ves District , part of the kraj Košický as well as for traditional landscape Zips .

geography

The municipality is located in the Hnilecké vrchy Mountains (part of the Slovak Ore Mountains ), largely in the valley of the Železný stream , a tributary of the Hnilec . The center of the village is at an altitude of 650  m nm and is 18 kilometers from Spišská Nová Ves .

Neighboring municipalities are Spišská Nová Ves, Teplička and Markušovce in the north, Závadka in the east, Nálepkovo in the south-east and Hnilec in the south-west.

history

Today's municipality was only created in 1962 through the merger of several mining locations: the core is formed by the place Hnilčík (locally also called Dolný Hnilčík), the others came from other municipalities: Bindt (previously part of Markušovce), settlement Hnilčík (locally also called Horný Hnilčík ) with parts of Cechy, Furmanec, Štolvek and Zimná dolina and the Roztoky settlement, all of which were previously in the municipality of Spišská Nová Ves.

Historically, the area was first mentioned in writing in 1315 as silva parua Guylnitz . In the late Middle Ages the area was divided between the estate of the Mariassy von Markušovce family and the town of Spiš Neudorf. The heyday of copper ore mines was in the 14th and 15th centuries, and small settlements emerged in their vicinity. After that, mining slowly declined, so that by the end of the 17th century only two hammer mills were still working. Mining experienced a renewed boom in the second half of the 18th century, but in the 19th century the retreat began again, which lasted essentially until the time of the first Czechoslovak Republic.

In 1787 there were 51 houses and 306 inhabitants in the place Hnilčík and in 1828 47 houses and 343 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in mining and forestry.

Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
