Rudňany (until 1948 in Slovak "Koterbachy"; German Kotterbach , Hungarian Ötösbánya - until 1902 Kotterbach ) is a municipality in the Spiš region in eastern Slovakia . It is located in the Hnilecké vrchy Mountains , a northeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains , about 11 km southeast of Spišská Nová Ves .
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1255 as Kuffurbach . In the Middle Ages, the metals copper, gold and silver were mined in the municipality. In a second period from the 18th to the late 20th century, ore mining experienced a renaissance in the community.
