Matejovce nad Hornádom (until 1998 "Matejovce"; German Matzdorf or Matejowitz , Hungarian Hernádmáté - until 1907 Matejóc ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 530 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) and is part of the Spišská Nová Ves District , part of the Košický kraj , as well as the traditional Spiš landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the southern part of the Hornádska kotlina basin on the right bank of the Hornád and on the northern slope of the Hnilecké vrchy Mountains , a sub-unit of the Slovak Ore Mountains . The small stream Laník flows through Matejovce . The center of the village is at an altitude of 427 m nm and is ten kilometers from Spišská Nová Ves .
Neighboring communities are Jamník in the north, Chrasť nad Hornádom in the east, Poráč in the southeast, Rudňany in the south, Markušovce in the west and Odorín in the northwest.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1277 as terra Mathey and was founded as a new foundation in the Belá forest by a certain Matthias, a servant of the Botyz team . At that time there were supposed to have been two places, one near the hill called Beľany today and the second on the Hornád river. In the 15th century there were several landowners, in 1553 the village was under the rule of the Spiš Chapter and was partly owned by several nobles. In the 17th century the Máriássy family became landlords. In 1828 there were 23 houses and 183 inhabitants.
Until 1918 the place in Zips County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Matejovce nad Hornádom had 499 inhabitants, including 469 Slovaks , 18 Roma and two Magyars . There is no information on ethnicity for 10 inhabitants.
474 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, two residents to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident each to the Orthodox Church and the Reformed Church. Eight residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 13 residents was not determined.
