Ján Kozák senior (born April 17, 1954 in Matejovce nad Hornádom , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak soccer player and current Slovak soccer coach .

Player career

Ján Kozák played for Lokomotíva Spišska Nová Ves from 1969 to 1974. That year, the attacking midfielder moved to Lokomotíva Košice . There he won the Czechoslovak Cup in 1977 and 1979 . In 1980 he was signed by Dukla Prague , for which he played two years and won the cup in 1981 and the championship in 1982. He then played again for Lokomotíva Košice until his retirement in 1986.

In 1981 Ján Kozák was named Czechoslovak Footballer of the Year .

Between 1976 and 1984 he played 55 times for the Czechoslovak national team and scored nine goals. Kozák took part in the 1980 European Championships . For the 1982 World Cup he was in the squad, but was not used.

Coaching career

Between July 2005 and January 2010, Ján Kozák, whose son Ján Kozák junior is a professional footballer, worked as the coach of the Slovak first division club MFK Košice . In April 2012 he returned to the coaching bench of this club, before he followed the call of the national football association in July 2013 and took over the Slovak national team .

On October 15, 2018, he resigned from his position as Slovak national coach.
