Club history

Czechoslovakia

It was founded in 1951 as ZSJ VSS Košice, but a short time later it was renamed TJ Spartak Košice VSS. After the reorganization of the Czechoslovak league system in 1953, Spartak was divided into the eastern group of the 2nd league, from which the team in 1955 succeeded in promotion to the 1st Czechoslovak league. There the team finished last and got relegated, but managed to get promoted again immediately and played from then on as Jednota Košice. This time the Eastern Slovaks were able to hold out in the top division for two years.

The recovery succeeded in 1963 as VSS Košice, the team settled in the first division in the next few years. In the 1970/71 season VSS was runner-up and played in the UEFA Cup the following season . In the first round, the team was eliminated with 0: 2 and 2: 1 against Spartak Moscow . In the following game year 1972/73 VSS Košice won the Slovak Cup, but lost in the final for the Czechoslovak Cup to Baník Ostrava 2-1 and 1: 3. In the league, the team finished third, which qualified for participation in the 1973/74 UEFA Cup . Again, the Slovaks did not get past the first round. Although they won 1-0 at home against Honvéd Budapest , they lost 5-2 in Hungary , and at halftime it was 2-2.

Four years later, VSS Košice was relegated from the first division, but returned after just one season. In 1979 the association was renamed ZŤS Košice. 1980 succeeded in winning the Slovak Cup again, the final of the Czechoslovak Cup lost the team against Sparta Prague 2-0. The following season, ZŤS Košice had to relegate and never returned to the 1st Czechoslovak League. As a second division, after a merger with TJ VSŽ Košice as 1. FC Košice playing club won the Slovak Cup. The final of the Czechoslovak Cup on June 6, 1993 in Poštorná won 1. FC surprisingly 5-1 against reigning champions Sparta Prague.

In the all-time table of the 1st Czechoslovak League from 1945 to 1993 1. FC Košice is 22nd out of 55 teams.

Slovakia

In 1997 and 1998 1. FC Košice became Slovak champions, and in 1997/98 they became the first Slovak club to play in the UEFA Champions League . In 2003 the club, plagued by financial worries, was relegated from the first division, in 2004 from the second division.

After the financial problems became more and more dramatic and the stadium “ Všešportový areál ” could no longer be used, the club management around general manager Róbert Varga decided to merge with the Košice suburb club FC Steel Trans Ličartovce . On July 30, 2004 this merger was completed and the former champion continued to play as the B-team of FC Steel Trans Ličartovce in the third division east.

On June 17, 2005, the FC Steel Trans Ličartovce was renamed MFK Košice .
