The Maria-Croon-Weg is a hiking trail dedicated to the writer Maria Croon . It is 18 kilometers long and leads from Orscholz to Saarburg . The path is marked with a brown mill wheel on a white field. It is one of the 19 Saar-Lor-Lux cultural hiking trails that deal with the historical and cultural heritage of the Saarland and its border regions.

Course of the route

The starting point of the hike is at Orscholz at the parking lot at the Cloef , from which the Saar loop can be seen. The path first leads in the direction of Oberleuken , then downhill into the valley of the Leukbach , which the path follows to the destination of the hike. The valley is reached at the Haselmühle, past Oberer and Unterer Stegmühle and Herrenmühle to reach Kollesleuken, a district of Freudenburg . The path continues to Trassem and along the Leukbach to the end point in Saarburg. Here the Leuk forms a waterfall, only to flow into the Saar shortly afterwards. There are many mills on the Leukbach, the most interesting in Saarburg, which is now used to generate electricity.

Waterfall in Saarburg

At one point where you can look across the valley from Leuk- and Weyerbach to Meurich , a plaque commemorates Maria Croon, who was born and buried in Meurich. She captured the Leukbachtal in literary form in many works, for example in Die Mission der Traut Halbach . Maria Croon wrote: “From here you could overlook the course of the river for a part. Beyond the colorful autumn forest climbed the slopes. The horizon rested above its peaks, today it was a little clouded by the rising mist and the smoke of the potato fires that burned in the fields. "
