Hiking trails in Saarland
The Saarland hiking trails are looked after by the Saarwald Association . For historical reasons, the paths in the Saar-Palatinate district run in the area of the Palatinate Forest Association . There are 17 supraregional hiking trails and 19 so-called Saar-Lor-Lux cultural hiking trails, in addition, the European long-distance hiking trail 3 leads over 23 km of its length through Saarland. The length of the marked trails is around 3,500 km.

All supraregional hiking trails are linked, some of the smaller trails such as the Höcherbergweg or the Hoferkopfweg connect the larger hiking trails with each other.

Regional hiking trails
The 19 Saar-Lor-Lux cultural hiking trails are a special concept. They refer to historical people from the Saarland, but also to historical events that have shaped the Saar-Lor-Lux area. Their creation goes back to an initiative of the Saarwaldverein and the Saarland cultural group. The paths are shaped by the historical and cultural similarities in the region and therefore not only lead through Saarland, but also through France, Luxembourg and Rhineland-Palatinate. These hiking trails are linked to the national hiking trails at at least one point.

Premium hiking trails are hiking trails that have been laid out following advice from the German Hiking Institute and have subsequently been awarded its hiking seal.
