The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a 410-kilometer hiking trail in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park and in the eastern Hunsrück and runs from Perl on the Moselle via the Saar loop near Mettlach in Saarland via Hermeskeil and Idar-Oberstein an der Nahe in Rhineland-Palatinate to Boppard on the Rhine . A junction from Hermeskeil leads to Trier on the Moselle as the Ruwer route . The climb was extended in 2012 from the Saarschleife by two stages to the Moselle near Perl and continued from Idar-Oberstein to Boppard in 2015. Although it only opened in 2007, it has already received the hiking seal from the German Hiking Institute because, for example, only 5% of the route is paved and more than 70% are natural trails. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is the best rated hiking trail in Germany.
The trail's logo is a green-blue rectangle with the H of Hunsrück and the S of the Saar loop . The path markings show the logo in a simple blue and white version.

Dream loops
Around the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig there are also 111 circular hiking trails between 5 and 20 km in length, the so-called dream loops. They either border directly on the actual climb or are located in its vicinity. They are all planned according to the criteria of the German Hiking Institute and run largely on nature trails and paths . There are currently 70 dream loops that have been awarded the hiking seal as hiking trails with a quality rating . The path markings of the dream loops are purple and white. The medieval path in Herrstein was “Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2010” in the “Tours category”.
