The place used to belong to the Electorate of Trier and was subordinate to the Office of Grimburg in administrative, judicial and tax matters .

The Merzig district was assigned to the Saar area under the League of Nations administration in 1920 according to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty - with the exception of the high forest communities (districts of Wadern, Losheim and Weiskirchen), including Steinberg, which continues to be part of the administrative district under the name " Restkreis Merzig-Wadern " Trier remained. The district administration of the "remaining district" was in Wadern . After the Second World War , France decreed that the “remaining district” belonged to the newly formed Saarland, which was under French influence .

Culture and sights

Parish Church of St. Liborius
Interior of the church with a view of the apse

The first documented chapel in Steinberg was demolished in 1743. In the same year, a new chapel was built on the same site, dedicated to St. Liborius . In 1803 Steinberg became a chapel parish of the parish of St. John the Baptist in Konfeld . The Steinberger Chapel was completely destroyed by fire in 1860. A new building took place in the years from 1863 to 1868. In 1921 the chapel congregation was elevated to a parish vicarie. In 1947 the elevation to parish took place.

The construction of a new church began in 1951 under Pastor Josef Pülske. On October 25, 1953, today's parish church , which had been designed as a tiered hall church by the architect H. Rost from Merzig , was inaugurated on Christ the King's Festival by the Trier Vicar General Peter Weins. The Liborius patronage was continued. The baroque high altar from 1725 is designed as a canopy altar resting on four columns. It comes from the medieval parish church of St. John and Paul in Beckingen, which was demolished in 1880/1881 . Above the altar there is a twelve-spoke rose window , which was donated by the then Saarland Prime Minister Johannes Hoffmann . It addresses the Holy Spirit in fiery colors . The side apse houses the baptistery . The sacristy is located in the gusset between the apse and the church hall. The church tower is positioned as a campanile to the right of the nave.

The equipment of the Steinberg church includes a reliquary - ostensorium with a relic of St. Liborius, which has been in the possession of the Steinberg chapel community since 1762. In 2004, a burglar-proof show niche was installed to display the relic. Up until the 1950s, Steinberg was also the destination of pilgrimages due to the relic , which were especially undertaken in the case of stone and kidney problems.

Numerous figures of saints, church windows and the Stations of the Cross in the Steinberger Church are from the previous building. The furnishings were restored in 2004. On April 18, 2007, the bones of St. Therese von Lisieux were exhibited in the church , a statue of the saint commemorating this. Since December 2019, a large painting of the Immaculate Conception has been hanging in the apse , which was probably painted by the "painter countess" Octavie de Lasalle in the 1880s. The picture was given to the church on permanent loan from the city of Wadern. The builder of the church, Pastor Josef Pülske, is buried in the church. The Steinberger Church is assigned to the Diocese of Trier . Patronage day is the feast of St. Liborius of Le Mans on July 23. The festivities in Steinberg always take place on the third Sunday in July.
