history
Today's SPD Saarland emerged in 1956 from the German Social Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party of Saarland . From 1957 to 1961 she was a ruling party in CDU-led cabinets ( Reinert I , Reinert II and Röder I ). From 1961 to 1985 the SPD was in the opposition. From 1985 to 1999 the SPD had a majority of MPs in the state parliament. From 1985 to November 1998 Oskar Lafontaine was Prime Minister of the Saarland; Reinhard Klektiven became his successor. In the state elections on September 5, 1999 , the SPD lost its majority. In the election on 5 September 2004 , they fared poorly as well in the election 30 August 2009 . In 2012, the SPD Saar became a junior partner in a grand coalition under Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer .
