A total of 51 seats

The election for the 8th Saarland Landtag took place on April 27, 1980.

After there was a stalemate between the CDU on the one hand and the SPD and FDP on the other in the state elections in 1975 and both camps had each received 25 seats, 51 seats were awarded for the first time in this state election.

In 1979, Prime Minister Franz-Josef Röder , who had been in office since 1959, died in office. The day before his death he had proposed Werner Zeyer as his successor, who stood for re-election in 1980.

For the first time, the mayor of Saarbrücken , Oskar Lafontaine, ran as the top candidate for the SPD . Lafontaine had already taken over the state chairmanship of his party in 1977. Under his leadership, the SPD became the strongest force in Saarland for the first time, but was unable to replace the black-yellow coalition.

The newly running Greens clearly missed entry into the state parliament.

The election led to a continuation of the CDU / FDP coalition with Zeyer as Prime Minister, Lafontaine remained Lord Mayor of Saarbrücken.
