The election for the 13th state parliament of Saarland took place on September 5, 2004 . The CDU emerged as the clear winner from the election and continued to provide a CDU sole government .

initial situation

Top candidates

For the CDU, the incumbent Prime Minister Peter Müller ran again as the top candidate. The SPD sent its parliamentary group leader Heiko Maas into the race.

Election targets

Peter Müller stepped up to confirm his absolute majority from 1999. The SPD and Heiko Maas wanted to win back the majority and form a government led by the SPD. The Greens and the FDP set the goal of returning to the state parliament.

Result

The ruling party CDU was able to record votes again and was now represented with 27 seats (+1) in the state parliament. The big loser in the election was the SPD. It suffered a drastic drop in votes, lost 7 MPs and only got 18 seats. This was the worst result of the Social Democrats since the 1960 election. The Greens and the FDP managed to jump over the five percent hurdle . They each sent three representatives to the Saarbrücken state parliament. During the legislative period, a member of the Greens left the party and remained a non-attached member of the state parliament. The NPD failed relatively with 4% short of entry into the Diet. The family party achieved the highest result in its history in a state election.
