State election in Saarland 1985
The state election in Saarland 1985 was the ninth state election in Saarland and took place on March 10, 1985. The SPD won an absolute majority of the seats and was subsequently able to form a sole government ( Lafontaine I cabinet ).
initial situation
Prime Minister Werner Zeyer stood for the CDU and Oskar Lafontaine for the SPD . Zeyer had been Prime Minister since 1979 ( Cabinet Zeyer I and Cabinet Zeyer II ).

The previously opposition SPD achieved a vote gain of almost four percentage points and two mandates, giving it an absolute majority. The previously ruling CDU , on the other hand, lost seven percentage points and three seats and achieved its worst result since 1960 with 37.3%. The co-ruling FDP / DPS , on the other hand, gained a good three percentage points and achieved a double-digit result for the first time since 1960 with 10.0% . The Greens , who failed to enter the state parliament with 2.9% of the votes when they first ran in 1980, also had to record losses with 2.5% of the votes. The NPD with 0.7% and the DKP with 0.3% clearly missed their entry into the state parliament.
The turnout stagnated at 85.0%.
Since the SPD had achieved an absolute majority from the opposition, Oskar Lafontaine was subsequently elected as the first social democratic prime minister of the Saarland and led a single SPD government ( cabinet Lafontaine I ).
