The previously opposition SPD achieved a vote gain of almost four percentage points and two mandates, giving it an absolute majority. The previously ruling CDU , on the other hand, lost seven percentage points and three seats and achieved its worst result since 1960 with 37.3%. The co-ruling FDP / DPS , on the other hand, gained a good three percentage points and achieved a double-digit result for the first time since 1960 with 10.0% . The Greens , who failed to enter the state parliament with 2.9% of the votes when they first ran in 1980, also had to record losses with 2.5% of the votes. The NPD with 0.7% and the DKP with 0.3% clearly missed their entry into the state parliament.

The turnout stagnated at 85.0%.

Since the SPD had achieved an absolute majority from the opposition, Oskar Lafontaine was subsequently elected as the first social democratic prime minister of the Saarland and led a single SPD government ( cabinet Lafontaine I ).
