The state elections in Saarland in 1990 took place on January 28, 1990 . The SPD emerged as the clear winner from the election and continued to provide a sole government .

initial situation

Top candidates

The incumbent Prime Minister Oskar Lafontaine ran as the top candidate for the SPD . The CDU entered the race with Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer .

Election targets

Oskar Lafontaine ran to have his absolute majority from 1985 confirmed. The CDU and FDP started with the aim of replacing the SPD government. The Greens , who had never been represented in the Saarland state parliament and only got 2.5 percent of the vote in 1985, set themselves the goal of moving into the state parliament for the first time.

Result

The ruling party, the SPD, was able to record votes and was now represented in the state parliament with 30 seats (+4). It achieved the best result in its history and the best result of a party in a state election in Saarland at all.

In contrast, there were burglaries at the CDU and FDP. The CDU suffered its worst result since 1955, the FDP barely made the jump over the five percent hurdle , which it had clearly exceeded in the last election.

The Republicans, who were running for the first time, achieved a result of 3.4 percent from a standing start and were thus ahead of the Greens.

With 2.6 percent of the vote, the Greens again failed to make it into the state parliament.

Government formation

The absolute majority of the SPD was confirmed and expanded. Thus Oskar Lafontaine was able to form a government again without a coalition partner .

Federal political aspects

The election came into the focus of the nationwide media, as it should ultimately depend on whether Oskar Lafontaine should run as a candidate for Chancellor of the SPD against Helmut Kohl in the federal election in the same year .

After his overwhelming election victory, Lafontaine was named the SPD's candidate for chancellor.
