Sorbian voters in Cottbus in the state elections in 1990

The state elections in Brandenburg in 1990 determined the composition of the 1st electoral term of the Brandenburg state parliament on the basis of the results from the 44 constituencies after the state was re-established on October 3, 1990. The election took place on October 14, 1990.

With the state election, the state of Brandenburg was reconstituted 11 days after the five new states had joined the Federal Republic of Germany . At the same time, the corresponding new state parliaments in the other new federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as well as a subsequent state parliament in Bavaria were elected.

The turnout was 67.1%. In contrast to the other four new federal states, the SPD became the strongest force in the state parliament in Brandenburg . The constituent session of the state parliament took place on October 26, 1990, and the SPD politician Herbert Knoblich was elected its first president .

The former president of the consistory, Manfred Stolpe , ran for the SPD and Peter-Michael Diestel for the CDU . Stolpe formed a traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, FDP and Bündnis 90 and was elected the first Prime Minister of the re-established state of Brandenburg on November 1, 1990 .
