The German Beer Drinking Union (DBU) was a small party in Germany that was founded in the German Democratic Republic shortly before the Volkskammer election in Rostock in 1990 and is considered the first German “ fun party ”. In mid-March 1990, the party included the student Andreas Häse (managing director), Jan Hackmann (deputy managing director), Mathias Krack (press spokesman), Steffen Hackmann (treasurer) and Rüdiger Fuhrmann (board member).

According to its own information, the DBU had up to 900 members.

Voter turnouts

In the Volkskammer election in 1990 in the GDR, the DBU only competed in the Rostock district and received 2,534 votes (0.0 percent in the GDR and 0.4 percent in the Rostock district). The mottos were, among other things, "Schwerter zu Bierhumpen" (modification of the phrase " swords to plowshares ") and "We are against foreign thin beer". After reunification, she stood in the Federal Republic of Germany in the first state elections in all five new states .

In the entertainment program Im Krug zum Grüne Kranze on October 2, 1990, representatives of the DBU, including Bernd Gutsmann, had the opportunity to explain their goals.

In the first state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on October 14, 1990 , the DBU achieved its best state election result with 0.6 percent of the votes and even achieved a mandate in Rostock and in the Parchim district council at the municipal level. In Saxony it came with 29 candidates to 0.5 percent and in the other new federal states to 0.3 percent each.

For the first all-German federal election in 1990 , the DBU was not approved and quickly lost its importance.

Content profile

The DBU limited itself in its election program to questions of beer law, it was particularly committed to compliance with the German Purity Law , to maintaining the state-subsidized beer prices in the GDR and to lifting the curfew .
