The state elections in Brandenburg in 1994 determined the composition of the 2nd electoral period of the Brandenburg state parliament on the basis of the results from the 44 constituencies . It took place on September 11, 1994.

Before the election

The top candidates for the SPD were again Prime Minister Manfred Stolpe and for the CDU the state chairman Peter Wagner .

Results

With a turnout of 56.33%, the SPD rose sharply and achieved an absolute majority (+ 15.93 percentage points). The PDS was also able to gain (+ 5.31 percentage points) and with 18.7 percent of the votes was on par with the CDU , which in turn fell by 10.7 percentage points, but received 72 votes more than the PDS and was able to defend its second place wafer-thin . The Greens , who succeeded Alliance 90 , which was successful last time, and the FDP fell below the five percent hurdle this time ; the civic alliance, split off from Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in protest about the new party , hardly played a role. The constituent meeting took place on October 11, 1994.

According to election observers, the result was seen primarily as a vote of confidence in Manfred Stolpe, who, together with his Minister of Social Affairs, Regine Hildebrandt, was enormously popular.

In contrast, the CDU in Saxony also achieved an absolute majority on the same day under the also very popular Prime Minister Kurt Biedenkopf , whereas the Saxon SPD suffered significant losses.

According to the assessment of the election observers, both elections only allowed limited conclusions to be drawn about the Bundestag election , which took place six weeks later , since both election results were strongly influenced by the personalities of Stolpe and Biedenkopf and less by national political factors.
