The state election in Saxony in 1994 was the second election to the Saxon state parliament after German reunification . It took place on September 11, 1994 parallel to the state election in Brandenburg .

Suffrage

The electoral law for the first state elections in 1990 was passed by the People's Chamber before the state of Saxony was formed . The new electoral law was passed on August 5, 1993 by the Saxon state parliament. It reduced the number of MPs from 160 to 120 and provided for a term of office of five years.

Election campaign

The CDU, SPD, PDS, Greens and FDP signed an election campaign agreement on March 15, 1994 under the name “Fairness Agreement” . This included rules for limiting election campaign costs and an “election campaign of the arguments”.

Result

With a turnout of 58.4%, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) under the leadership of Prime Minister Kurt Biedenkopf was able to clearly defend the absolute majority in the state parliament and achieved its best result to date in Saxony as well as its best result at state level with clear gains. Once again, she was able to win all 60 direct mandates. The Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) was able to increase its result by 6.3 percentage points, while the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) suffered losses (−2.5 percentage points).

The parties B'90 / Die Grünen and FDP missed the re-entry into the state parliament.
