The state elections in Saxony in 2019 on September 1, 2019 were the seventh election to the Saxon state parliament since the re-establishment of the Free State of Saxony in 1990. The state elections in Brandenburg took place on the same day .

Were elected 119 MPs from five parties that the on October 1, 2019 the 7th Parliament of Saxony have constituted.

In December 2019, the previous Prime Minister Kretschmer formed the Kretschmer II cabinet, legitimized by this election, in a Kenya coalition with the Greens and the SPD.

initial situation

In the 2014 state elections , the CDU received 39.4% of the vote, the Left 18.9%, the SPD 12.4%, the AfD 9.7%, the Greens 5.7%, the NPD 4.9% and the FDP 3.8%. CDU and SPD signed a coalition agreement; Stanislaw Tillich (CDU) was re-elected as Prime Minister and formed the Tillich III cabinet . Martin Dulig (SPD) became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Economy, Labor and Transport .

In the federal election on September 24, 2017 , the CDU in Saxony received 26.9% of the second vote; the AfD was just ahead of that with 27.0%. Tillich then resigned as prime minister and party chairman; Michael Kretschmer took over both positions in December 2017 .

In the 2019 European elections , the AfD in Saxony received 25.3%, while the CDU only received 23%. The CDU achieved its worst result in an election in Saxony since 1990.

Coalition statements before the election

Possible coalition Seats
Total seats 119
Absolute majority (from 60 seats)
         CDU, Greens and SPD 67

Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer ruled out any form of cooperation with the AfD and the Left Party for the CDU. The Greens were open to a coalition with the CDU. After the SPD top candidate Martin Dulig initially did not want to lead a coalition election campaign, a week before the election date he still campaigned for a coalition with the CDU and the Greens . For the FDP, the top candidate Holger Zastrow also ruled out coalitions with the AfD and the Left Party.

Participating parties

State lists and district election proposals had to be submitted by June 27, 2019. Parties that were not represented in the Bundestag or in a state parliament had to submit 1,000 support signatures in order to be admitted to the state list; The signatures of 100 eligible voters were sufficient for a constituency nomination.

On July 5, 2019, the state election committee decided on the admission of the submitted state lists to the state elections. One candidate was removed from the list of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party, and three from the Reason Party . At the AfD, the list was only approved with its first 18 applicants. The AfD had drawn up its state list at two meetings from February 8 to 10, 2019 (list places 1 to 18) and from March 15 to 17, 2019 (places 19 to 61). In the opinion of the state electoral committee, the second assembly was not a continuation of the first, but a separate assembly from the first, which is inadmissible. A change in the electoral procedure at the second meeting was also criticized.

On July 10th, six of the deleted AfD list candidates filed a complaint with the Saxon Constitutional Court and applied for a temporary injunction against the decision of the election committee. Another constitutional complaint was filed by a citizen, and the AfD also announced that it would be appealing to the Federal Constitutional Court . On July 25, the Constitutional Court of Saxony issued an interim order according to which list positions 19 to 30 are to be permitted because their deletion was "very likely to be illegal".
