In 1996 he qualified as a university lecturer for modern Austrian history at the University of Salzburg with a thesis on the actions of the National Socialists in the Austrian state parliaments. In his academic work, especially on the First Republic , Schausberger tries “to contribute to the awareness that the existence of our parliamentary democracy is not a matter of course, but has to be defended again and again by convinced democrats”. Above all, he examines the period of the rise of National Socialism before the seizure of power and the question: “How did it come to this?” In his habilitation thesis he comes to the conclusion: “The 'partial collaboration' with or the 'partial assimilation' of States and democracy-affirming parties vis-à-vis political groups that reject and fight against parliamentary democracy or a state always goes to the detriment of the state or democracy. This is a lesson from history that applies again and again, not least to recent developments in various European countries. ”There are“ turning points in history at which those in charge of politics fatefully influence further developments with their decision in one of several ways. At such turning points - and that is the always current reference - all democratic forces have to subordinate their party political self-interests to the good of the state and the safeguarding of democracy. "

Schausberger was chairman from 1989 to 1996, since 1996 a member of the board of directors of the Dr.-Hans-Lechner-Forschungsgesellschaft and from 1993 to 2019 a member of the executive committee of the Austrian Research Association in Vienna.
