Claus Reitan (born July 1, 1954 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian freelance journalist, author , columnist and moderator . He was editor-in-chief three times , from 1995 to 2005 for the Tiroler Tageszeitung , from 2006 to 2008 for the daily newspaper Austria and from 2008 to the end of 2012 for Die Furche . His topics are sustainability , politics , media , Austria and the European Union . In 2014/15 he completed the academic certificate program Sustainability & Journalism at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg . In 2015 Claus Reitan was awarded the professional title of "Professor" by the Federal President for his services as an adult educator, author and journalist.

Career

Claus Reitan graduated from the Werkschulheim Felbertal in Salzburg in 1973 . After the one-year volunteer year , he studied law and political science for a few semesters at the University of Innsbruck (1st stage). He attended basic courses and trainer seminars at the Board of Trustees for Journalist Training and completed the business administration course at the St. Gallen Business School .

Claus Reitan began his journalistic career in 1978 at the Tiroler Tageszeitung in Innsbruck. In 1983 he switched to the editorial office in Vienna as a political editor. From 1991 to 1992 Reitan spent a year abroad at Axel Springer Verlag in Hamburg and Berlin. In 1992 Reitan moved to Vienna as a domestic policy and Europe editor in the founding phase of News . Three years later, the Tiroler Tageszeitung brought him back to Innsbruck as editor-in-chief for the relaunch phase. After having headed the editorial department at the daily newspaper Austria since 2006 , he moved to the weekly newspaper Die Furche in 2008 in the same position . The end of 2012 he gave up his position as editor-boss there, and has since been freelancing and self-employed working as a journalist. From December 2013 to April 2014 he was also a project-related senior advisor for quality journalism in the network of the Milestones in Communication agency.

As editor-in-chief of the Tiroler Tageszeitung , Reitan was an interviewer for the ORF broadcast Pressestunde several times and in 2004 one of the proponents of the editors-in-chief which he headed until 2013 and which co-founded the new Austrian press council . Reitan participated in juries for the award of prizes for journalists and media scholars and was awarded the Eduard Hartmann Prize in 1996.

Claus Reitan represents the political conception of the eco-social market economy initiated by Josef Riegler. In his opinion pieces he argues for a pro-European, republican-democratic, conservative-liberal attitude, for tolerance, understanding, justice and sustainability.

Moderator and lecturer

Reitan moderates discussions on politics and business, media and journalism, integration and religion; currently for the Julius Raab Foundation, for the Hayek Colloquium 2013 and the Institute of the Regions of Europe , of which he contributed for his special efforts to convey the topic of regionalism and decentralization in very profound presentations and thus deepen the understanding of regionalism was awarded the IRE Journalist Award 2013.

Lecturer

Claus Reitan is co-editor of the fifth edition of the Handbook of Practical Journalism (UVK) developed by Heinz Pürer . Reitan was and is active in the training and further education of journalists, including at the Board of Trustees for Journalism Training in Salzburg, at the University of Applied Sciences Journalism in Vienna, at the Center for Journalism and Communication Management at the Danube University Krems , at the University of Innsbruck and in management Center Innsbruck as well as at the Friedrich Funder Institute in Vienna and for newspapers in school .
