Joseph Weiß (already at the time also Jusef ), since 1860 Ritter von Weiß , since 1872 Baron von Weiß (born January 12, 1805 in Zellhof near Bad Zell , Austria ob der Enns ; † January 13, 1887 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian politician , Lawyer and governor of the state of Salzburg .

Life

Weiß began his career in 1828 with city and state law in Linz and was transferred to the district capital of Salzburg in 1842. From May 18, 1848 to April 17, 1849 he represented the constituency of Grein on the Danube as a non-attached member of the Frankfurt National Assembly . In his profession as a lawyer, he experienced multiple transfers that eventually led him back to Salzburg, where he rose to be President of the Salzburg Regional Court and held this position until 1874. As early as 1860 he was raised to the knighthood , in 1867 the manor elected him a member of the state court .

As a result of the February patent of 1861, the State of Salzburg, which was administered from Linz until 1849, was allowed to have its own parliament for the first time since it belonged to Austria . This consisted of 26 members (25 elected members and the Prince Archbishop with a " virile vote "). Since the Austrian ruling house wanted neither an "Altesalzburg" nobleman nor a clergyman for this office, on March 31, 1861 , Emperor Franz-Joseph appointed Joseph von Weiß, the then highest-ranking official among the deputies, as the first Salzburg governor .

His main task was to build up an independent regional administration that was independent of Upper Austria . The first state parliament was prematurely dissolved in 1867 due to the settlement with Hungary and the necessary restructuring of all sub-areas of the imperial state . In the second state elections, Weiss emerged, this time as Radstadt's representative, again as governor. The distribution of seats in the state parliament now brought 7 conservatives to the 18 liberals . In order to be able to reverse these political conditions, the election was again made in 1871. Weiss was able to be confirmed in office again, but was urged to resign as early as September 1872. His successor was Hugo Graf Lamberg on September 30, 1872 . On the occasion of his resignation, Weiß was raised to the baron status and chose a coat of arms that resembled the Salzburg state coat of arms . After his death he was buried in the Salzburg municipal cemetery.

Remarks

  1. The "governor" had a different function than that of the 1st and 2nd republic. He was the chairman of the state parliament (or state committee), roughly equivalent to today's state parliament president . State leader what the country's president.
