Rudolf Biebl (born April 6, 1820 in Salzburg , Austria ; † April 19, 1895 ibid) was a member of the Salzburg state parliament and mayor of the then crown state capital of Salzburg.

Life

At the age of 29 he was a self-employed trader and owned the Wegschaider & Biebl cutlery shop at Rathausplatz 2. In 1858 he was first active in the Salzburg municipal council. From 1858 to 1860 and 1874/75 he was President of the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He was a member of the Salzburg state parliament from 1861 to 1870 and a second time from 1879 to 1890.

His work as mayor

From 1875 to 1885 he held the office of mayor of the crown land capital Salzburg. Already under his predecessor Dr. Harrer , he was considered a finance expert in the community. Despite the construction of the Fürstenbrunn aqueduct, which brought the city into great financial difficulties, the community under Biebl was able to recover quickly. The city ​​of Salzburg also did not spare the stock market crash after the Vienna World Exhibition in 1873. However, Biebl managed to realize many important projects. He demonstrated far-sightedness with the regulation and construction of the Giselakai, which brought the municipality a profit of more than 120,000 guilders after the sale of the building site obtained. His contemporaries described him as an ardent supporter of liberal principles, but who was also always filled with genuine religiosity. was.

Honors and deaths

Rudolf Biebl was a holder of the Royal Bavarian Merit Medal (1870/71), Knight of the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class and Commander of the Belgian Leopold Order .

On January 13th, 1879 he was named the 32nd honorary citizen of Salzburg “for his many years of meritorious work as a member of the state parliament, municipal council and the chamber of commerce ... as well as his particularly outstanding services to the city of Salzburg ... as mayor” . After his death, he found his final resting place in the family crypt at the Salzburg municipal cemetery in Morzg.

Another honor was given to him posthumously in 1909 with the naming of Rudolf-Biebl-Strasse. As a continuation of Aiglhofstrasse to Ignaz-Harrer-Strasse, this connects the districts of Maxglan and Lehen .
