The state election in Saxony in 2009 was the fifth election to the Saxon state parliament after the fall of the Wall ; it took place on August 30, 2009. At the same time, the state parliament in Saarland and the state parliament in Thuringia were newly elected. It was the last election date before the 2009 federal election on September 27, 2009.

The CDU with Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich remained clearly the strongest party with a slight loss of votes. Even the Left lost votes shares. While the SPD was able to slightly improve its historically low election result from 2004, the FDP made significant gains, so that a state parliament coalition of the CDU and FDP was possible as an alternative to the continuation of the previous CDU / SPD coalition. Alliance 90 / Greens received 6.4% (after 5.1 in the previous election). The NPD Saxony's share of the vote fell from 9.2% to 5.6% (minus 3.6%). The small party animal welfare party achieved with 2.1% the best result of all parties that could not move into the state parliament and also the highest result of the party in state elections so far.

After the election, a government coalition consisting of the CDU and FDP was formed, which Tillich elected Prime Minister of the state government .

The turnout was 52.2%; it was 7.4 percentage points lower than in 2004.
