Günther Karlhermann Schneider (born January 8, 1955 in Aßlar , district of Werdorf in Central Hesse ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From December 2017 to December 2019 he was State Secretary in the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior . He was previously a member of the Saxon State Parliament from 2004 to 2017 . Schneider is honorary president of the German Youth Hostel Association .

Life

Schneider passed his first state examination in law in 1980. His doctorate as Dr. jur. took place in 1982, as well as in 1985 his 2nd state examination in law. He worked as a lawyer until 1988, after which he was a judge at the Social Court in Frankfurt am Main until 1991 . From 1991 to 1994 he was a research assistant at the Federal Constitutional Court , then a judge at the Saxon State Social Court . In 1999 he was appointed presiding judge at that court. In 2002 he became an honorary professor at the Law Faculty of the TU Dresden .

Among other things, he is involved in voluntary work in the German Youth Hostel Association, of which he was elected President in November 2017. Before that, he was President of the Saxon Youth Hostel Association for eleven years. He is also chairman of the Saxony regional association of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge eV

Günther Schneider is married and has five children. He belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran denomination.

In 2000 Schneider became a member of the CDU. In 2002 he was elected district chairman of the CDU district association Middle Ore Mountains . In the state elections in Saxony in 2004 , he moved into the Saxon state parliament via the direct mandate in the constituency of the Middle Ore Mountains , and successfully defended his mandate in 2009 , as in 2014 . During the fourth electoral term (2004–2009) in the state parliament he was chairman of the committee for constitution, law and Europe and a member of the committee for social affairs, health, family, women, senior citizens and youth and also speaker of the CDU parliamentary group's disability policy. In the fifth electoral term (2009–2014) he was chairman of the Parliamentary Control Commission (PKK) and a member of the Constitutional, Legal and European Committee as well as a member of the Committee on Science and University, Culture and the Media . He was also the science policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group. In the sixth electoral term, from 2014 to 2017, he continued to be Chairman of the Parliamentary Control Commission (PKK) and was a member of the Constitutional and Legal Committee; He was also a spokesman for Bundeswehr matters.

On June 7, 2015, he was elected honorary mayor of the Grünhainichen community .

On December 18, 2017 he was appointed State Secretary in the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior by Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer . Therefore, he resigned his mandate in the state parliament and also gave up his mayor's office. With the formation of the Kretschmer II cabinet as a result of the 2019 state election , he resigned as State Secretary on December 20, 2019.
