Werner Steffen Flath (born February 10, 1957 in Bärenstein in the Erzgebirge ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 1994 to 2014 he was a member of the Saxon state parliament , since 2008 as chairman of the CDU state parliamentary group. Before that he was a member of the Saxon state government from 1999 to 2008 in various functions .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1975 and completing basic military service, Steffen Flath studied agricultural sciences from 1977 to 1982 at the Martin Luther University in Halle , where he graduated with a degree in agricultural engineering. Between 1982 and 1990 Flath worked in various positions at the Agrochemical Center in Schlettau and at VEB Getreidewirtschaft Annaberg-Buchholz . From 1990 to 1994 he was head of department in the district office of Annaberg .

Steffen Flath is married and has two children. He is of the Roman Catholic denomination.

politics

Flath has been a member of the CDU (East Germany) since 1983 . From 1991 to 1994 he was chairman of the Annaberg district association. From 1995 to his entry into the Saxon state government in 1999, Flath was Secretary General of the CDU Saxony and from 2001 to 2013 its deputy state chairman.

Flath was a member of the Saxon State Parliament from 1994 to 2014. He always entered the state parliament through a direct mandate in the Annaberg constituency ; in the 2009 election he received 48.0% of the first votes.

From 1999 to 2004 Flath was Minister of State for Environment and Agriculture ( Biedenkopf III , Milbradt I and Milbradt II cabinets ), and from 2004 to 2008 Minister of State for Education . Between the election of Stanislaw Tillich as Prime Minister on May 28, 2008 and the appointment of the Tillich I cabinet , Flath acted on behalf of the finance minister. In June 2008 he moved from the state government to the head of the CDU parliamentary group .

In 1994 , 1999 , 2004 , 2009 , 2010 and 2012 Flath represented Saxony in the Federal Assembly for the election of the Federal President .

In the 2014 state elections , Flath did not apply again for a mandate. He has announced that he wants to work as a consultant in Kyrgyzstan in setting up a system of vocational training. In the local elections on May 25, 2014, he was elected to the district council of the Erzgebirgskreis . On July 1, 2014, he became a member of the Broadcasting Council of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and was its chairman from 2015 to 2017.

On May 24, 2014, State Parliament President Matthias Rößler awarded the four parliamentary group leaders Flath, Martin Dulig (SPD), Antje Hermenau (Die Grünen) and Holger Zastrow (FDP) the Saxon Constitutional Medal in recognition of their work to include the ban on new borrowing in the constitution of the Free State of Saxony .

Positions

Flath is a member of the Berliner Kreis , an informal CDU internal conservative group of modernization and Merkel skeptics and was on the board of trustees of the ProChrist evangelization movement . He rejects tax equality for homosexual couples. In this context he explained: “God created us as women and men and I believe that he had thought something out of it.” During the federal party conference in Hanover in 2012, Flath refused to discuss the topic at the party conference, he said: “ A tax equality of homosexual communities with the marriage of men and women cannot be our goal. Even the debate would actually be absurd for the CDU ”.
