Ludwig von der Pfordten
Ludwig Karl Heinrich Freiherr von der Pfordten (born September 11, 1811 in Ried (Innkreis) , † August 18, 1880 in Munich ) was a Bavarian and Saxon legal scholar and politician .
Life
Von der Pfordten studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen . In 1828 he became a member of the Onoldia Corps . After his habilitation in 1833 , he became an associate professor in 1834 and full professor for Roman law at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg .
In 1843 he became a professor at the University of Leipzig at the Faculty of Law. In 1845/46 and 1846/47 he was rector in Leipzig. He became the leader of the Saxon Liberals. In March 1848 he was appointed Saxon Foreign and Education Minister (briefly also Interior Minister) in the general ministry under Karl Braun . After its end on February 24, 1849, the Protestant von der Pfordten became Minister of the Bavarian State Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 1849 , and in December of the same year he also took over the chairmanship of the Council of Ministers . His endeavors to create a third power between Austria and Prussia out of the medium-sized German states proved to be unfeasible . In the spirit of the Triassic concept, he had a “ Third Germany ” in mind, led by Bavaria . Against this background, he was partly responsible for the fact that Bavaria actually torpedoed the Erfurt Union project . After the agreement between Austria and Prussia in the Olomouc Treaty in December 1850, the triad concept lost its importance in the following years. Von der Pfordten resigned from office in 1859. After that he was the Bavarian envoy to the Bundestag in Frankfurt.
A few months after taking office in 1864, Ludwig II made von der Pfordten chairman of the Council of Ministers again. Von der Pfordten, like many contemporaries, underestimated Bismarck's determination to clarify the “ German question ” under Prussia's leadership. After the failure of his mediation efforts and the Prussian federal reform plan and the military defeat of Bavaria in the German war on Austria's side against Prussia, he finally resigned in December 1866.
Ludwig Karl Heinrich Freiherr von der Pfordten died at the age of 68. The tomb of Louis Pfordten is on the old southern cemetery in Munich (burial site 33 - Row 5 - 9th) Location .
His son was the natural philosopher Otto von der Pfordten .
