Hans Maria Clemens Franz Konstantin Freiherr von Podewils-Dürniz , from 1911 Count von Podewils-Dürniz (born January 17, 1850 in Landshut , † March 14, 1922 in Munich ), was a Bavarian politician.

origin

He came from the originally Pomeranian noble family Podewils . His parents were the Bavarian colonel and chamberlain Freiherr Konstantin von Podewils (1820–1887) and his wife Philippine, born von Juncker and Bigatto (1822–1900), widowed baroness von Frank. Through his mother he was descended from the state chancellor Franz Xaver Josef von Unertl . Paternal grandfather was the colonel and commandant of the Germersheim Fortress , Franz Friedrich Jakob von Podewils (1779–1842).

Life

He studied law in Munich and worked from 1872 to 1875 in legal practice in Munich, Weilheim and Landshut. In 1879/80 he worked for the Miesbach district office and the government of Upper Bavaria, and in 1880 he was embassy attaché. In 1881 he became legation secretary at the Bavarian legation in Berlin, where he was promoted to legation counselor and extraordinary envoy in 1887, and later to an authorized minister at the Italian court. 1896–1902 he was envoy extraordinary and plenipotentiary minister at the Austro-Hungarian court in Vienna.

In 1902 he was appointed Bavarian Minister of the Interior for Church and School Affairs. In 1903 he took over the office of chairman in the Council of Ministers , which in personal union with the post of Minister of State of the Kgl. House and exterior was connected. During his term of office, a democratized state election law (1906) and a reformed municipal electoral law (1908) fell. He was considered the "darling" of the Prince Regent Luitpold , but was replaced in 1912 by Georg von Hertling . The appointment of a representative of the majority parliamentary group in the state parliament with the office of head of government now indicated that Bavaria was beginning to become parliamentarians.

In 1918 Podewils represented Bavaria in the peace negotiations in Brest-Litowsk , and in 1920/21 he worked as an authorized representative in establishing the borders in Upper Silesia and West Prussia .

family

Podewils married Friederike Freiin von Dürniz on April 14, 1874, the last of her family. The resulting name and coat of arms association with the barons of Dürniz as von Podewils-Dürniz was permitted on April 4, 1878 with a Bavarian decree . On March 6, 1911 Clemens Freiherr von Podewils-Dürniz was raised to the rank of count in Bavaria . His son Hans (1875–1948) embarked on an officer career in the Bavarian Army , was the commander of various cavalry formations during the First World War and, in 1920, a commissioner at the German-Polish border commission. He was passed as a colonel in 1922 .

His grandson was the writer Clemens Graf von Podewils -Juncker-Bigatto.
