Adolph von Pfretzschner
Adolph Freiherr von Pfretzschner (born August 15, 1820 in Würzburg , † April 27, 1901 in Munich ) was a Bavarian politician.
Life
Pfretzschner was a son of the Bavarian captain Ludwig Carl Nikolaus Pfretzschner (1790-1843). He studied law in Munich and later worked for the governments of Upper Bavaria and Middle Franconia . In 1849 he moved to the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance . In 1865 he became Minister of State for Trade and Public Works, and in 1866 for finance. In this capacity he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of St. Michael in 1871 .
In 1872 he was appointed Minister of State of the Royal House and Foreign Affairs as well as Chairman of the Council of Ministers by King Ludwig II. Against the conservative majority in Parliament, the King continued to appoint only liberal ministers. In 1873 Pfretzschner was also raised to the lifelong Imperial Council of the Crown of Bavaria .
In October 1875, when the clerical majority of the chamber openly accused the Adolph von Pfretzschner ministry in an address and asked the king to meet their demands, Ludwig opposed this brusquely and in 1876, when he passed the state parliament, assured the ministry of his unshaken trust. The king remained true to this firm stance against the ultramontane majority in the next few years. In 1880, the continuing decline of the Liberals in the state parliament in favor of the United Right, as well as pressure exerted by Bismarck in March led to Pfretzschner's resignation as Foreign Minister and Chairman of the Council of Ministers.
Pfretzschner was considered politically moderately liberal. The day after his resignation he was promoted to the baron class. He is not to be confused with his cousin, the Kronach banker and member of the customs parliament Karl Pfretzschner (1810–1878).
