Aloys Franz Xaver Maximilian Franz de Paula Count von Rechberg and Rothenlöwen zu Hohenrechberg (born September 18, 1766 in Munich , † March 10, 1849 at Donzdorf Castle ) was a Bavarian diplomat and politician. He came from the old Swabian noble family of the Counts of Rechberg .

Live and act

The son of the baron (count since 1810) Maximilian Emanuel von Rechberg (1736-1819) and his wife Walburga von Sandizell became court advisor in Munich in 1787 . From 1795 to 1797 he was envoy of Duke Max Joseph von Pfalz-Zweibrücken to the Perpetual Diet in Regensburg . From 1797 to 1799 he exercised this function as ambassador to the Electorate of the Palatinate and in 1798 was an authorized representative at the Rastatt Congress .

In the service of the Bavarian Elector and, from 1806, King Max Joseph , Rechberg was envoy to St. Petersburg (1799, 1801), Berlin (1800) and Vienna (1806 to 1809 and 1813 to 1815). In 1815 he took part in the Congress of Vienna as Bavarian representative , where he resolutely championed Bavarian sovereignty . Since 1817 he was an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

After the fall of Count Montgelas in 1817, Rechberg was his successor as Minister of the Royal House and Foreign Affairs , and he also became a member of the Chamber of Imperial Councils . He pursued a conservative policy and leaned on Austria's foreign policy. The new King Ludwig I dismissed him when he took office in 1825.

After that Rechberg lived on his ancestral estate in Donzdorf in Württemberg . From 1815 until his death he was a hereditary member of the Württemberg Chamber of Classes , but only attended the meetings personally once, on December 1 and 2, 1826.

The Bavarian general Anton von Rechberg (1776–1837), who had married into the Palatine line of the Wittelsbach family, was his brother.
