Anton von Rechberg , full name Antonius von Padua Johann Nepomuk Felix Johann Baptist Pankraz Bernhard Judas Thaddäus Graf von Rechberg and Rothenlöwen zu Hohenrechberg (born May 13, 1776 in Donzdorf , Donzdorf Castle ; † January 4, 1837 in Munich ) was a Bavarian lieutenant general and Court official who came from the old Swabian noble family of the Counts von Rechberg .

Life

He was the son of the Bavarian Chamberlain Maximilian Emanuel von Rechberg (1736–1819) and his wife Walburga von Sandizell (1744–1818), sister of the Electoral Palatinate President Joseph Anton Maria Graf von Sandizell (1746–1803).

In 1794 Anton von Rechberg joined the Palatinate-Bavarian army and distinguished himself particularly in 1805, in the Third Coalition War , as well as in the campaigns of the Fourth Coalition War 1806–1807. In 1808 Rechberg advanced to lieutenant colonel and educator of Prince Karl of Bavaria , the younger brother of the later King Ludwig I , in which position he remained - from 1809 as a colonel - until 1813. Promoted to major general in 1813 , he took part in the wars of liberation 1813-15 as Bavarian chief of staff under Field Marshal Prince Carl Philipp von Wrede . After the end of the fighting, Count von Rechberg returned to court service, in 1816 became chief court master of Prince Karl and in 1818 adjutant general of King Max I Joseph ; he held the rank of lieutenant general since 1824. His brother Aloys von Rechberg (1766–1849) had been Minister of the Royal House and Foreign Affairs since 1817 , as the successor to the overthrown Maximilian von Montgelas .

Anton von Rechberg married Casimire Maria Louise Antoinette von Zweibrücken in 1814, widow of the officer Karl Gustav von Sayn-Wittgenstein, who died at Borodino in 1812, and daughter of Baron Christian von Zweibrücken , a Wittelsbacher from the Palatinate . The marriage remained childless, but the son Gustav von Sayn-Wittgenstein (1811–1846) existed, from the wife's first marriage, whom Rechberg raised as a stepson. Casimire von Rechberg was the palace lady of Queen Karoline of Bavaria .

Anton von Rechberg died on January 4, 1837 in Munich (according to a newspaper report of the then rampant vomiting epidemic ) and was buried according to the Catholic rite. The Requiem took place on January 11th in the Cathedral of Our Lady there.

His nephew Bernhard von Rechberg (1806–1899) was Foreign Minister of the Austrian Empire from 1859 to 1864 and also Prime Minister from 1859 to 1861. His great-nephew Otto von Rechberg (1833-1918) was a center politician and multiple president of the German Catholic Days .

Awards

According to his obituary, Anton von Rechberg was the holder of several prestigious awards. He wore the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown and the Russian Order of Saint Anne , the Commander's Cross of the Austrian Leopold Order , as well as the Knight's Cross of the Bavarian Military Max Joseph Order , the Austrian Military Maria Theresa Order , the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle and the French Legion of Honor .
