Georg von Metzsch , since 1899 von Metzsch-Reichenbach , since 1916 Count von Metzsch-Reichenbach (born July 14, 1836 in Friesen ; † September 7, 1927 in Dresden ; full name: Karl Georg Levin von Metzsch-Reichenbach ) was a Saxon politician , u. a. also Prime Minister (chairman of the entire ministry ).

Life

Metzsch came from an old Vogtland-Thuringian noble family . His father Karl von Metzsch (1804–1880) was chamberlain and chief court cupid attorney at the royal court in Dresden , his brother Gustav von Metzsch chief master of ceremonies in Saxony and member of the first chamber of the Saxon state parliament.

After studying law in Leipzig , he joined the Saxon civil service at the Dresden District Court in the late 1860s . From 1875 to 1880 Metzsch was Amtshauptmann in Amtshauptmannschaft Oschatz , from 1880 to 1887, he held this office in Dresden-Neustadt . In 1888 he became a lecturer in the Saxon Ministry of the Interior . In 1891, Metzsch became Minister of the Interior , and shortly afterwards Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saxony . In 1901 Metzsch took over the leadership of the Saxon government as chairman of the entire ministry ( Prime Minister ) .

The two brothers Georg and Gustav received on December 29, 1899 in Dresden the royal approval to use the name of Metzsch-Reichenbach and to include the coat of arms of the city of Reichenbach in the family coat of arms .

Metzsch had a decisive influence on politics in Saxony from 1891 to 1906. The three-class suffrage introduced by him and the leading conservative politician Paul Mehnert in 1896 against the further strengthening of the SPD resulted in fierce electoral struggles in Saxony in 1905/06. The clashes, which also led to rioting by the police, ultimately led to Metzsch's resignation. When King Friedrich August III. Appointed owner of the manor, he belonged to Chamber I of the Saxon State Parliament from 1907 until its dissolution in 1918 . He was also appointed Minister of the Royal House in 1906 and held this office until 1918.

Metzsch married Marion Göschen (1845–1877), a sister of the British politician George Joachim Goschen, 1st Viscount Goschen and Edward Goschen from the Oberlößnitz merchant and banker family Göschen ( Villa Göschen ). Metzsch-Reichenbach's second wife was Félicie born in 1889. Freiin von Koenneritz (1852–1924, daughter of the Real Privy Councilor Eduard von Könneritz), who, like her husband and his first wife, is buried in the common family grave in the St. Pauli cemetery . Georg von Metzsch-Reichenbach's family died out in the next generation.

Since 1856 Metzsch was a member of the Corps Misnia Leipzig .

Honors

Metzsch-Reichenbach was made an honorary citizen of the city of Dresden in 1905. On February 1, 1916, he and his wife Félicie were raised to hereditary count .
