The election to the 8th state parliament of Saxony is expected to take place in the late summer of 2024, provided that the parliament is not dissolved early.

The 2019 election was marked by the high winnings of the AfD , which gained almost 18 percent of the votes and became the second strongest force. The CDU ended after losses with nearly 32 percent as the strongest party in front of the AFD. The Left and the SPD received 10.4 and 7.7 percent of the vote, respectively. The Greens gained ground and achieved their best result in a state election in Saxony with 8.6 percent, while the FDP once again failed to make it into parliament with 4.5 percent.

After the election, the CDU, the Greens and the SPD formed a “ Kenya coalition ”. Michael Kretschmer (CDU) was re-elected Prime Minister and Head of the State Government . In parliament, the government has a relatively safe majority with 67 of the 119 seats.
