Rico Gebhardt (born May 27, 1963 in Schlema , Aue district ) is a German politician ( PDS / Die Linke ). He has been a member of the Saxon State Parliament since 2004 . From 2009 to 2017 he was chairman of the Saxon state association . From August 2012 to August 2019 he was chairman of his parliamentary group “ opposition leader ” in the Saxon state parliament.

Life

Rico Gebhardt graduated from the polytechnic high school after the 10th grade and then completed an apprenticeship as a cook. He did three years of military service in the National People's Army . From 1984 to 1987 he was a full-time FDJ functionary. Subsequently, he worked as a sales point manager, division manager in retail and managing director of a fish wholesaler. In the 1990s he was a personal assistant to a member of the Bundestag. Since 2000 he has been the state manager of the party Die Linke in the state association of Saxony.

Gebhardt lives in Dresden, is married and has four children.

Rico Gebhardt joined the SED in 1981 (from 1990 PDS ). After reunification, he was a local councilor in the Aue-Schwarzenberg district for his party from March 1990 to April 2003 and a city ​​councilor in Aue from June 1994 to April 2003 . In the local elections in 1994 and 1999 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of mayor of Aue.

From 1999 to 2009 Gebhardt was regional manager of the PDS (or after the renaming in 2007 Die Linke Sachsen ). Since October 2004 he has been a member of the Saxon State Parliament . There he is a member of the Committee on Rules of Procedure and Immunity Matters as well as the Constitutional, Legal and European Committee and a deputy member of the Presidium. He is the domestic policy spokesman in his parliamentary group . In September 2009 he ran for the office of parliamentary group chairman, but lost significantly to André Hahn .

On November 7, 2009, he was elected as the successor to Cornelia Ernst with 156 of 202 votes as the state chairman of the Left in Saxony and was confirmed in this office on November 5, 2011. On July 17, 2012, he was elected to succeed André Hahn as chairman of the Left Party in the Saxon state parliament. He took over this chair on August 1, 2012.

On November 16, 2013, a state party conference in Leipzig nominated him as the top candidate of his party for the state election on August 31, 2014 . In November 2017 he was replaced as chairman of the state party - at his suggestion - by Antje Feiks , but Gebhardt retained the chairmanship of the parliamentary group. For the 2019 state election , he again ran as the top candidate of the left.
