Carsten Schatz (born January 10, 1970 in Altenburg ) is a German politician ( Die Linke ). Since 2020 he has been chairman of the parliamentary group DIE LINKE in the Berlin House of Representatives alongside Anne Helm .

Life

Schatz and his family moved to Berlin a year after he was born in Altenburg . He lived in Prenzlauer Berg , Schöneberg and currently in Friedrichshagen , among others . After graduating from high school in 1988, he attended the officers' college of the land forces from 1988 to 1990 . He then worked from 1990 to 1993 at Deutsche Kreditbank and Deutsche Bank . From 1994 he worked as a consultant and worked from 1995 to 1998 as a consultant of the PDS - parliamentary group . From 1998 to 2001 he was head of the constituency office of the Bundestag member Petra Pau . In addition to his work as state manager of the PDS / Die Linke Berlin , Schatz studied history, philosophy and political science at the Fernuniversität Hagen . Until he became a member of the Berlin House of Representatives in 2013, he was a research assistant for Stefan Liebich, Member of the Bundestag . He lives in a same-sex marriage with partner Kai Maurer.

Country manager and election campaign

Schatz was elected state manager of the PDS Berlin for the first time in 2001 with 72% and was confirmed in this position by the state party conference in 2003 with 81% of the delegate's votes. In December 2005, Schatz was confirmed in his office as the state manager of the Berlin regional association with 89% of the votes at the state party conference. In June 2007, Schatz was elected the first Berlin state manager of the new DIE LINKE party. With 83%, Schatz received the best result of all directly elected state board members. In the next elections in December 2008 and November 2010, Schatz was re-elected. In November 2010, Schatz was re-elected as the state manager of Berlin's LINKEN. In June 2012 he resigned from this position after more than 11 years.

Schatz led the election campaign of Berlin's LINKE for the elections to the 17th German Bundestag . In this election, the Berliner LINKE achieved the best Bundestag election result in its history and was the second strongest political force in Berlin , ahead of the SPD . Previously, he was responsible for the federal election campaigns in 2002 and 2005 and the European election campaigns in 2004 and 2009.

On September 22, 2012, Schatz was elected chairman of the Treptow / Köpenick district association.

House elections and MdA

Schatz was a direct candidate for election to the 16th Berlin House of Representatives in Tempelhof-Schöneberg , constituency 5 (Tempelhof Süd / Mariendorf-Nord) and a candidate for BVV in the elections on September 17, 2006. He was also the campaign leader of the Berlin Left Party in these elections . Schatz was a member of the negotiating commission for the continuation of the red-red government .

Schatz leads the election campaign of the Berlin LINKEN for the elections to the 17th House of Representatives of Berlin in September 2011. In constituency 6 of the Treptow-Köpenick district , he was nominated by his party as a direct candidate. Schatz was initially elected to the Berlin House of Representatives via the state list of his party, but in a recount he narrowly lost the mandate. Due to the death of MEP Lothar Bisky on August 13, 2013, Berlin MEP Martina Michels moved into the European Parliament. Schatz took her place in the Berlin House of Representatives. Carsten Schatz thus became the first openly HIV-positive parliamentarian in Germany. There are now other openly HIV-positive MPs, such as the Hessian Green politician Felix Martin .

In the election for the 18th Berlin House of Representatives in 2016, he won the election as a direct candidate in the constituency of Treptow-Köpenick 6 . In the House of Representatives he is in the main committee, in European and federal affairs, media, in the 2nd committee of inquiry BER II and in the subcommittee on investment management and controlling. He is spokesman for the federal government, Europe, Berlin and Brandenburg, anti-discrimination of his group. On June 2, 2020, Carsten Schatz was elected as parliamentary group leader of the LEFT in the Berlin House of Representatives alongside Anne Helm .

Political Actions

The former squatter was a member of the Statute Commission of the PDS, as well as a member of the Historical Commission of the PDS. Schatz was the G8 representative of the Berlin Left Party and organized the protest against the G8 summit in Heiligendamm in 2007 .

In spring 2008, Schatz led the campaign against the referendum Tempelhof remains a commercial airport! under the motto no! for flight operations in Tempelhof .

In 2009, Schatz led his party's campaign, Religion Is Voluntary! against the referendum of the Pro Reli initiative, which had the goal of introducing religious instruction in Berlin schools as a compulsory subject.

Relationship to the GDR

In the 2005 Bundestag election campaign, he hit the headlines because he said that the Berlin Wall was built to “secure the existence” of the GDR . Furthermore, the building of the wall was “not irrational” because of the subsequent “internal stabilization” of the GDR. Schatz added: "a society that finds the wall necessary has deficits that it has to grapple with". The CDU and the FDP demanded the resignation of the historian Schatz, the then state party leader Stefan Liebich stood behind his managing director and campaign manager and rejected the demands for resignation, as did the former state chairman and member of the Bundestag Petra Pau .

Relationship with the WASG

After the Linkspartei.PDS had decided on double membership between the WASG and the Left Party at its federal party congress , Schatz applied for membership to the WASG on December 12, 2005. The WASG district board of Tempelhof-Schöneberg approved his membership application. A former PDS member who was expelled from the party filed an objection to membership with the WASG state board. The regional executive committee of the WASG decided not to decide on the objections against the double membership of Schatz and Gregor Gysi . The WASG state executive advised both of them to leave the WASG themselves. The relationship between the Berlin Left Party and Berlin WASG was considered very tense and a acid test in the unification process. On June 30, 2007, the state association of the merged party Die Linke was formed in the state of Berlin, Klaus Lederer was elected as the first state chairman and Schatz as the first managing director.

German AIDS Help

In October 2008, Schatz, who is himself infected with HIV, was elected to the board of Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe in Erfurt . In his lecture at the start of the “I know what I do” campaign, Schatz made clear the new self-confidence of AIDS-Hilfe: “We confidently carry out our mission as a representative of the interests of men who are threatened and affected by HIV. That is why the campaign was developed with the knowledge and skills of the entire association, i.e. with the involvement of the target group. And that is why we will not let anyone dictate what content and what images we address our target group with. ”In October 2011, Schatz was re-elected to the board of the German AIDS Aid Association. As soon as he moved into the Berlin House of Representatives, Schatz announced that he would not stand again for the upcoming elections in November 2014. He left the board of DAH after 6 years.
