Tempelhof-Schöneberg is the seventh administrative district of Berlin and had 350,984 inhabitants on December 31, 2019.

In 2001 the district was created as part of the administrative reform through the merger of the former Tempelhof and Schöneberg districts. The administrative center is the Schöneberg Town Hall .

The Mercedes-Benz plant in the south of the district is one of the largest private employers in the city of Berlin. A center for the energy industry has established itself at the Südkreuz train station with the EUREF -Quartier.

The Berlin district is known for the Tempelhofer Freiheit (former Tempelhof Airport ) as a local recreation area and for the Schöneberg district with its homosexual scene in the so-called Regenbogenkiez.

geography

The district extends from the southern inner city of Berlin to the southern border of the country. The district is populated very differently. More than a third of the district's population lives in Schöneberg, the most populous district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg. Friedenau is the smallest part of the district (and one of the smallest in Berlin), but the most densely populated part of Berlin.

In 2014 it was decided to swap space with the adjacent Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district .

1920-2000

With the formation of Greater Berlin on October 1st, 1920, Schöneberg lost its independence and from then on, together with Friedenau, formed the 11th Berlin administrative district Schöneberg . The Tempelhof district was formed in the same year as the 13th administrative district from the communities of Tempelhof, Mariendorf (excluding the southern end ), Marienfelde and Lichtenrade, which had previously belonged to the Teltow district .

The building of the Berlin Chamber Court was the seat of the People's Court during the National Socialist era . During the division of Germany it was the seat of the Allied Control Council .

The Schöneberg district belonged to the American Sector of Berlin (West Berlin) from 1945 to 1990 . In the Schöneberg Town Hall during had division of Berlin , the Berlin House of Representatives (until 1993) and the Senate of West Berlin based.

The town hall and the streets leading to it were the place of many rallies and the state visit of the US President John F. Kennedy . There he gave his speech in 1963 with the famous quote " I am a Berliner ".

The Burmester Audio Systems GmbH was founded in Schöneberg and is known as a manufacturer of premium audio components.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Marienfelde, founded in 1902, is one of the largest industrial employers in Berlin. Around 2500 employees are employed there. The plant belongs to Daimler AG .

Tempelhof, the baked goods company produces Bahlsen from Hannover in the Oberlandstraße . In addition, a factory outlet is offered at the location.

Procter & Gamble also produces blades and other shaving supplies under the brand name Gillette in Oberlandstrasse .

The Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) on Schöneberger Wittenbergplatz is a department store with an upscale range and luxury goods . It is one of the most famous department stores in Europe and, with around 60,000 square meters of retail space, is the largest department store in Germany .

The adjacent Tauentzienstrasse , or Tauentzien for short in Berlin , forms the extension of Kurfürstendamm and is one of the most expensive locations in Germany. Tauentzienstrasse is one of the busiest shopping streets in the city.

In Tempelhof there is also a shopping and business center on Tempelhofer Damm between Alt-Tempelhof and Ordensmeisterstraße . The shopping center of the same name was opened at Tempelhofer Hafen in 2009 .

The district became known in 2015 for the establishment of Germany's first so-called meeting zone in the area of ​​Maaßenstraße. However, the project is considered to have failed.

Public transport

The Metropol

The Columbiahalle in Tempelhof is a venue for pop and rock concerts. The hall offers space for up to 3500 visitors.

The Metropol on Nollendorfplatz, formerly also known as the Neues Schauspielhaus , is a versatile event space. Concerts and various events such as privately organized galas or high school graduation celebrations take place here.

The district operates the Leo Kestenberg Music School named after Leo Kestenberg with the Tempelhof Symphony Orchestra (SOT).

The district is also home to the ufaFabrik cultural center and the Urban Nation , which is known beyond the city limits ; an exhibition house for contemporary urban art.

Markets and festivals

The weekly market on Winterfeldplatz takes place every Saturday. The pumpkin festival is celebrated once a year in Schöneberger Akazienstrasse.

In December, at Christmas time, numerous gospel concerts take place in the Apostle Paulus Church every year. Since the 1990s the church has developed into a center for church and gospel music.

In the Nollendorfkiez around Fuggerstraße , Motzstraße and Nollendorfplatz there are numerous pubs, bars and shops that are mainly aimed at a homosexual audience. Every year on a weekend in June or July the Lesbian-Gay City Festival takes place in this part of Berlin, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world with a mixture of information stands for same-sex groups, show stages, as well as snack bars and sales stands.

The Berlin ePrix , a Formula E motorsport race , was held on the Tempelhofer Feld in 2015 and 2017 . One of the traditional horse racing tracks in Germany is the Mariendorf harness racing track . The German Trotter Derby has been held there every year since 1895 .

The Olympic Sports Club Berlin is one of the largest sports clubs in Tempelhof-Schöneberg with around 2500 members. The club has brought seven Olympic medals, 37 medals at world and European championships as well as world games and over 280 German championships to Berlin.

There were at least 15 yoga studios in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district in 2017 .

The Schöneberg Sports Center is one of the largest indoor swimming pools in Berlin. Competitions in different disciplines of swimming are held here. The Stadtbad Schöneberg is one of the well-known indoor pools in the leisure sector.

Since the opening of the Tempelhofer Feld, many Berliners have been using the large areas of the park as an individual training and practice area. Kiteboarders and wind skaters have free space there to practice their sport.
