The Alter Park park is located in the Tempelhof district of Berlin between Parkstrasse and Tempelhofer Damm . It originated in the 19th century.
history
The bushes and trees around some of the remaining holes from the Ice Age, which were previously located on the undeveloped and non-agricultural areas, initially developed into a wild forest without human intervention. The green space described here was acquired by the municipal office of the former village of Tempelhof in 1907 from private individuals. The councilors had it converted into a community park for the public. In 1941, additional areas were added south of the previously used area.
description
The park is part of a larger complex that, together with the Bose Park , Franckepark and Lehnepark, forms a local recreation area in Tempelhof. In the middle of the park is the Klarensee , which emerged from a dead ice hole . The lake had to be renatured in 2007 and 2008 . Among other things, shallow water zones were created so that reeds could be planted there.
Conifers , pines and larches are dominant in the Old Park , but there are also plenty of ornamental shrubs and lawns.
The park is at running athletes popular because he has extensive grounds in connection with the Bosepark, the Francke Park and the rest park.
Art and memory in the park
At the western end of the park is stainless steel - sculpture of the German pictures Hauer Karl Menzen entitled compression - harmoniously . A force acts on one side of the column, which leads to a bulge on the other side: "With menzenes, movement reveals itself as an accumulated force that is full of energy and tension and in which everything pushes for discharge."
Other sculptures such as Laokoon III (1982) by Volkmar Haase can be found in the Alter Park.
After 46 Berliners and Brandenburgers were killed in the devastating tsunami in Ko Phuket in 2004 , the members of the Hoffen self-help group had a memorial stone erected on the edge of the park in the churchyard in coordination with the district office. The inauguration took place in December 2005 with a small memorial service in the village church.
In the neighborhood
The Tempelhof village church borders the park . Originally a settlement of the Knights Templar stood here , but it was destroyed in World War II. The cemetery is still there - a memorial stone for the 47 Berlin and Brandenburg victims of the tsunami of December 26, 2004 in the Pacific was erected there.
The Tempelhof town hall is also not far away.
