The temple Damm (part of the federal highway 96 , colloquially Te dam called) is extending in the north-south direction Arterial Road in Berlin . It is named after the Tempelhof district of the same name in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district.

history

Until 1949, Tempelhofer Damm was called Berliner Straße because, from the perspective of Tempelhof, which was independent before its incorporation in 1920, the street was the main street in the direction of Berlin. In the meantime the name Tempelhofer Chaussee was used. In 1949 it was dedicated to Tempelhofer Damm. Until the construction of the southern extension of the U6 underground line , tram lines 96 ( turning at Friedrich-Karl-Strasse to Lichterfelde ) and 99 (to Lichtenrade ) ran in the middle of the street . At that time the Tempelhofer Damm had cobblestones and rows of trees to the side. The Berlin street led to the renaming on Stubenrauchstraße bridge and even 140 meters further south to Tempelhof-Mariendorfer border. Since the renaming of Berliner Straße to Tempelhofer Damm and Chausseestraße to Mariendorfer Damm in 1949, the bridge area was omitted from the street name. In addition, the southern part of Berliner Straße was assigned to Mariendorfer Damm.

Tempelhofer Damm is part of a pilot project by the Senate Department for the Environment, Transport and Climate Protection for a gradual speed limit of 30 km / h on Berlin's main streets, which is to be implemented there in autumn 2018 - initially on part of the street.

The Berlin Water Company , Vattenfall , the Gasag and the Berlin public transport plan to renovate what is expected for several years will take the Tempelhofer Damm 2,022th

course

Following the Mehringdamm coming from Kreuzberg ( Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district ), Tempelhofer Damm begins at the Platz der Luftbrücke in the north of the Tempelhof district. In front of the main entrance of the Tempelhof Airport , which was operated until October 30, 2008 , the road to the south first runs along the airport building and continues in the direction of the S-Bahn route of the Ringbahn . To the east is the former airfield of what was then the world's oldest commercial airport, to the west is the Neu-Tempelhof location . Since the two runways ran in an east-west direction, the aircraft taking off and landing crossed Tempelhofer Damm almost at right angles during flight operations .

Shortly before the bridge of the Ringbahn there are some allotment garden colonies to the east between the former airport site and the S-Bahn line.

The Tempelhof railway station after the reopening of the circular railway in 1994 also an important transfer point between the ring and the subway ( U6 : Alt-Tegel - Alt-Mariendorf ) and several bus lines . The U6 runs the entire length of the Tempelhofer Damm under its lane and stops - from north to south - at the following stations:

Behind the bridge that runs under the Ringbahn, the Tempelhofer Damm crosses under the city motorway .

As far as the Tempelhof train station, there is a wide median between the two lanes, each of which has only one marked lane , on which trams used to run. Behind the S-Bahn and railway bridge and the motorway bridge, the respective lanes are arranged directly next to one another, but separated by a narrow median.

At the intersection with Alt-Tempelhof street , Tempelhofer Damm crosses the former village green of the historic center of Tempelhof. The green widening of the village green and some older houses are still clearly visible.

The shopping and business center of the district is located between the intersections of Tempelhofer Damm / Alt-Tempelhof and Tempelhofer Damm / Ordensmeisterstraße , where the term “Te-Damm” is particularly common. In this section, unlike in the Neu-Tempelhof location , there was never a median. On 29 April 2009, on the grounds of Port Tempelhof the shopping center Tempelhofer Hafen opened with 18,000 m² of retail space.

The Tempelhof Town Hall is located behind the center of Tempelhof . On the opposite side of the street (to the west), the Old Park begins with the Klarensee .

The Tempelhof tax office is located in front of the Stubenrauchbrücke over the Teltow Canal ; to the east of the Tempelhofer Damm, the Tempelhof harbor provides access to the canal and to the industrial area in the eastern Tempelhof . The Mariendorfer Damm is right in the middle of the Stubenrauchbrücke . Shortly afterwards, on the corner of Ullsteinstrasse, the Tempelhof district merges into the Mariendorf district .

Bicycle traffic trial at Tempelhofer Damm

In March 2008, a 14-year-old cyclist died after being run over by a truck driver on Tempelhofer Damm. Since then, bicycle traffic initiatives have called for the construction of a safe bicycle traffic facility along the road. A concept for such a conversion was decided by the "Network Bicycle-friendly Tempelhof-Schöneberg" as a resident application in September 2017 by the Tempelhof-Schöneberg District Council. According to this, a so-called "bicycle traffic trial" is planned on the road: a bicycle traffic system is to be set up as a trial between Alt-Tempelhof and the Teltow Canal. A public kick-off event took place on August 22, 2018. The guidelines for this were drawn up by a committee in three workshops between September and December and completed on December 3, 2018. The aim of the experiment is "to implement continuous, safe and protected cycling facilities in both directions as quickly as possible and to minimize barriers in the street area". The planned duration of the test was given for several years and at the latest until the planned renovation of the water pipes and the complete redesign of Tempelhofer Damm and Mariendorfer Damm, and thus probably until around 2025.

On March 9, 2019, three proposals for a redesign were presented at a public event, which the traffic planning company IVAS commissioned by the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district had developed. The first proposal envisages the elimination of parking spaces in favor of bike paths protected by bollards. According to the second proposal, one of the two existing lanes would be rededicated and areas for parking and delivery traffic would be set up. The third proposal does not envisage a protected cycle path, the retention of both lanes and the establishment of delivery zones.
