The underground station was opened on September 10, 1927, and was the southern terminus of line C II (today: U6) until the opening of the Tempelhof underground station in 1929 . It was designed by Alfred Grenander with a wide platform and large lobby, from which exits led towards the airport .

During the 1930s, the airport, which was already too small, was rebuilt and the new reception building was built by Ernst Sagebiel as part of the plans for converting Berlin into the " world capital Germania ". In January 1937 the underground station was renamed Paradestrasse after the former parade ground of the Berlin garrison on the neighboring Tempelhofer Feld . The following station in the north of Kreuzberg (today: Platz der Luftbrücke ) was named the airport . The exits to the airport at the Paradestrasse train station were closed and the vestibule made considerably smaller; the closed part was later used by the Berlin transport company for a shooting range.

In 1946 another renaming to Franz-Werfel-Straße was planned and already shown on city maps, but never carried out.

The station

Today the underground station has three exits: two flights of stairs on the west side of Tempelhofer Damm on both sides of Paradestrasse are reached through a tunnel from the station lobby, and an elevator leads from the platform to the east side of Tempelhofer Damm.

The station was originally sand-colored. In 1989/90 it was redesigned according to a concept by the artist Gabriele Stirl . The walls of the platform hall got white tiles with colored additions and show "10 variations of a serial spectral color system".

Connection

At the underground station there are no transfer options to other local public transport lines in Berlin .
