Stadtmitte underground station
The Stadtmitte underground station is a station on the U2 and U6 lines of the Berlin U-Bahn . He is under the Friedrichstrasse or Mohrenstraße in Berlin district of Mitte . The platform of today's line U2 was put into operation on October 1, 1908, the platform of the U6 on January 30, 1923. The station, which is referred to in the station directory of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) as Mi (U2) or Mic (U6) , is particularly known to Berliners for the much-used transfer route between the two lines, also popularly known as the “ mouse tunnel ”. Since both platforms have an elevator to the surface, they are considered barrier-free .
history
The construction work for the new route from Leipziger or Potsdamer Platz to Spittelmarkt began on December 15, 1905. The opening with the new train stations Kaiserhof (today: Mohrenstraße), Friedrichstraße (today: Stadtmitte), Hausvogteiplatz and the terminus Spittelmarkt could be opened on 1. To be celebrated October 1908. Alfred Grenander designed the stations .
On January 30, 1923, another station for the new C line was added to the existing station on the east-west line , but in contrast to the underground line from 1902, it belonged to the city of Berlin. In order to enable a transfer between the two competing routes, a long connecting tunnel was built, the so-called "Mäusetunnel", because the city of Berlin had the city's own train station built under Leipziger Strasse , where it was easier to switch to the tram . Initially, the station was renamed Friedrichstadt before it was given its current name in the mid-1930s.
On August 13, 1961, with the construction of the Berlin Wall, the platform on Line C became one of the " ghost stations " in East Berlin. Until 1990 the transition between West Berlin Line 6, the north-south route, and East Berlin Line A, the east-west route, was closed. Around 1970 the platform hall on Line A received a new cream-colored cladding made of ceramic tiles . In 1995 the BVG had the platform extended to 105 meters, renovated and a lift installed.
