history

As part of the redevelopment of the Westend construction area , on June 23, 1906, the Territorialgesellschaft Westend, the then independent city of Charlottenburg and the Hochbahngesellschaft , which operated all underground lines at the time, agreed on a new branch of the elevated and underground railway from the Bismarckstraße underground station ( now: Deutsche Oper ) to the Reichskanzlerplatz . The area, which at that time was only loosely built up or not at all, was to be connected to the center in this way , and potential buyers were to be encouraged to settle there. The construction work for the 2.6 kilometer long route with the three stations Sophie-Charlotte-Platz , Kaiserdamm and Reichskanzlerplatz began shortly after the contract was signed.

As for all subway structures at the time, the in-house architect of the elevated railway company Alfred Grenander designed the three stations. As with other buildings, he designed the stations soberly and objectively. The Kaiserdamm station - named after the last German Emperor Wilhelm II - received two side platforms, each 109 meters long and 3.5 meters wide . Grenander designed the walls with white, small tiles. Already two weeks before the actual opening date, Wilhelm II drove the route to Reichskanzlerplatz , the journey was named "Kaiserfahrt". The new line officially went into operation on March 29, 1908.

The importance of the station soon increased with the opening of the new radio tower and the nearby exhibition center in 1926. The first Green Week took place there in 1926 and the first International Aviation Exhibition in 1928 . For this reason, the elevated railway company had three additional entrances, including a mezzanine, built on the western side of the station. The redesign was also carried out by Alfred Grenander. In 1936, the station received the annex Messedamm in order to place an additional reference to the exhibition center .

The station was hardly damaged in the Second World War , and it was not until April 25, 1945 that the BVG ceased operations here. Due to the minor damage, a shuttle service between Ruhleben and Knie (today: Ernst-Reuter-Platz ) could already be set up on May 17, 1945 , and since September 15, 1946, trains on line A I between Ruhleben and Pankow have been running again.

Shortly after Konrad Adenauer's death on April 19, 1967, the Berlin Senate Administration unceremoniously renamed Kaiserdamm, including the underground station, to Adenauerdamm on April 27, 1967 . This in turn sparked major protests among the population; the Rhinelander was not one of the West Berliners' favorite politicians . Due to these protests, the name change was reversed on January 15, 1968.

In 1986 the BVG had the train station renovated for the 750th anniversary of the city and equipped with light gray tiles . Nothing significant has changed at the station itself since then.

To create barrier-free access, two elevators are planned to be installed at the eastern ends of the platform. The work for this is to begin in 2019, the costs are estimated at around 2.8 million euros.

Connection

At the underground station you can change from line U2 to bus line 139 of the Berlin transport company. The S-Bahn station Messe Nord / ICC on the Ringbahn is around 200 meters away .
