Hausvogteiplatz underground station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hausvogteiplatz underground station is a station on the U2 line of the Berlin underground . It is located under the eponymous Hausvogteiplatz in the Berlin district of Mitte , near the Gendarmenmarkt and the Foreign Office . The station went into operation on October 1, 1908.

history

The ticket booth designed by Alfred Grenander in Art Nouveau style and destroyed in the Second World War

At the Hausvogteiplatz train station, the architect Alfred Grenander , who was commissioned to design the stations of the Centrumslinie , created a clearly structured space, the track rear wall was given small white tiles with yellow frames. The entrances and exits of the station were relatively narrow, the station itself is on a curve and is therefore relatively confusing. This narrow area at the eastern entrance was particularly noticeable, where the check-in room and cash desk could not be moved underground. Therefore Grenander designed a hexagonal ticket booth in Art Nouveau style .

Hardly anything changed at the station itself over the next few years. The station suffered considerable damage in the Second World War . In particular, a bomb hit on February 3, 1945 in the eastern area of the station destroyed the station considerably. In April there was also water damage due to the blasting of the Landwehr Canal. Therefore, unlike many other Berlin subway stations, the station could not be reopened in 1945. Although the first trains on the A I and A II lines ran on the route again, they did not stop at the station itself. The rebuilt station only went into operation on January 7, 1950. The Art Nouveau ticket office was not rebuilt, it was replaced by simplified entrances and exits.

The subway station has had gray tiles since the 1970s

During the GDR era, hardly anything changed at the station itself, only the trains on the former line A no longer went to Ruhleben or Krumme Lanke , as this was in the western sector . Due to the division of Berlin, the end of the line was now Thälmannplatz and Otto-Grotewohl-Straße (today: Mohrenstraße). It was not until the 1970s that the station received a new back track wall, which instead of small white tiles now adorn large and gray tiles.

After the reunification of the two halves of Berlin, the trains on today's line were able to pass through as they did before the division between Pankow in the east and Ruhleben in the west. In 1998 the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe had the eastern entrance restored to its original state, but they too decided not to rebuild the ticket booth. An addition to the name of this institution, originally intended when the foundation stone was laid for the Foreign Office, was not implemented.

As part of the complete renovation by the BVG, the stations between Alexanderplatz and the city center are to be adapted to their historical condition. This has already been implemented in the neighboring Spittelmarkt train station . The BVG wants to continue doing without the advertising space in the train stations, where historical views of Berlin's inner city are to be seen. However, there is still no date for the implementation of these plans at Hausvogteiplatz station.

Due to its relatively insignificant location, the station will only receive an elevator system for disabled access for passengers after 2016.

Connection

At the underground station there is no direct transfer to other local public transport lines in Berlin .
